"Development Sketches & Painting: The Fall of Camelot"

Since I was a little girl and my mother read bedtime stories to me, I have been fascinated with the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in Camelot. While Sir Mallory really established the mythology of King Arthur, there have been many books, plays and films over the last hundred years and have each given some new light and creativity on Camelot's mythology. The element I decided to focus on in the painting was the Fall and Decline of King Arthur's Court, when Sir Lancelot arrives on the scene and rides away with Guinevere's heart. It is then that the bastard child Mordred makes his move to claim his right to his father's throne. In the heart of it all is that mysterious and strange druid... Merlin. Below are my development sketches, color tests and layout design.
