"Cleopatra at the Gates of Alexandria"

This illustration is of Cleopatra the VII at the gates of the ancient Egyptian city of Alexandria, where the Ptolemy Dynasty ruled for about 300 years. The Ptolemies conquered Cyprus and parts of what are now Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, and Libya. The two most important contributions that Alexandria offered were the Great Library (which contained the largest collection of the world's knowledge) and the Pharos Lighthouse, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.
