"The
Goddess Demeter Waits for Spring's Return" This sketch is the start of a new illustration inspired by the Greek mythological tale of Demeter, the harvest goddess. In the tale, Demeter created the season of winter out of spite and revenge when the god Hades abducted and held prisoner her daughter Persephone, whom she loved dearly. "I suffer!" cried Demeter. "I suffer! Here..." She struck herself on the chest. "Here - in my mother's heart. And if I suffer, then everyone else shall suffer too. For the six months that Persphone spends with Hades, no grass will grow, no flowers blow, no trees will bear. So long as she is below, there will be desolation everywhere." That was the Greek explaination for why summer and winter are the way they are. That is why there is a time for planting, and a time when the earth must sleep under frost. Painting In Progress...
